Dr. Orlando Simonetti brings distinguished R&D, management, and academic credentials in biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering. At The Ohio State University, he serves as Director of Cardiovascular MRI and CT Research at the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Radiology, and participatory faculty in Biomedical Engineering.
In industry, Dr. Simonetti served as R&D leader of cardiovascular MR imaging R&D at Siemens for over a decade. He has published extensively in the scientific literature and has been awarded 7 patents on novel methods of cardiovascular MR image acquisition and image processing, several of which are in use by the major MRI vendors. His primary research interest is in developing new applications for cardiovascular MRI and CT. Active areas of research include new image acquisition and processing techniques to characterize the effects of atherosclerotic disease and classify the components of arterial plaque, exercise MRI stress testing, and improved MRI methods of detecting pathological changes in myocardial tissue.
Dr. Simonetti serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, and is an ad hoc reviewer for scientific journals Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Circulation, American Journal of Roentgenology, Investigative Radiology, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and Heart.
Dr. Simonetti holds membership in Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR), where he is a past member of the Board of Trustees. He is a member the American Heart Association’s Cardiovascular Radiology Scientific Council, and is also active in the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and its Cardiac MRI Study Group.
Dr. Simonetti holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from The Ohio State University.
